Join the wind power revolution.

Since September of 2003, OG&E has offered renewable, efficient wind power as a forward-thinking energy alternative — and an environmental ally. In fact, purchasing as little as 1,000 kWh of wind power per month for one year is equivalent to removing nine tons of emissions from the air.

Today, with the addition of our Centennial Wind Farm, the OG&E wind power program is one of the largest in the country, with 170 megawatts of power — enough electricity to power about 51,000 homes. And wind power is now an important part of OG&E’s diverse portfolio, helping to balance the needs of 2 million customers.

OG&E’s investment in wind power works for Oklahoma, having made renewable energy an important part of this state’s economy and energy portfolio. It also helps keep our environment clean, provides tax revenue for communities and schools near wind farms, and when natural gas prices are high, it even offers savings to customers. But if the wind isn’t blowing, OG&E’s coal and natural gas power plants make sure we never miss a beat. Having a balanced electricity generation mix of coal, natural gas and wind assures reliability for each of our customers.

The cost to join Oklahoma's wind revolution is low — a typical residential customer can purchase wind power for as little as $2.25 extra a month. Your actual charge will vary based upon your actual consumption and your account history.

OG&E Wind Power Farms

In 2006, OG&E won approval from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to build the Centennial Wind Farm—one of the only wind farms to be fully owned and operated by an electric utility—in Harper County, just north of Woodward. Its more than 80 turbines can generate 120 megawatts of electricity. What’s more, OG&E’s partnership with Florida-based FPL Energy Company adds over thirty additional wind turbines to our portfolio — all located in the Oklahoma Wind Energy Center, 13 miles northeast of Woodward. These wind turbines can generate 50 megawatts of electricity that feeds into the OG&E system.

Once placed on the OG&E power grid, all this electricity is pooled like water, and is available to all our
customers. And there’s no new or different equipment required at your home or business.

How a Wind Turbine Generates Electricity

OG&E’s collection of computer-controlled turbines, manufactured by General Electric Co., features blades made of multiple layers of composite fiberglass and epoxy. Operating in winds ranging from 7 to 55 mph, the turbine offers peak performance at 25 to 55 mph (for maximum safety, turbines automatically shut down in winds exceeding 55 mph).

A shaft extending from the three rotating blades drives the generator, converting mechanical motion into electric power. Electricity flows through high-capacity cables to a nearby substation, where voltage is stepped up and delivered to the OG&E power grid.
